Why The Masks??

to show that talent comes first and image comes last!!  Sadly, our society has become so image driven, but true artists from the worlds of music, sports, modeling, acting, and entertainment still hold on to the reality that talent comes first and image comes last – and that is what makes a TRUE artist’s spotlight continue to shine.  Who are the girls behind the masks?  Scholars, fighters, songwriters, rebels, businesswomen, sisters, Dreamers …

The American Alternative-Pop sister duo comprise of sisters Tonya and KiKi Skinner.  The Dominant Duo was inspired by:  George Michael, Savage Garden, Heart, Prince, U2, Marvin Gaye, The Bee Gees, Bananarama, WHAM!, and the Pet Shop Boys.  The sisters first showed that sisters can ROCK when they took to the stage at their state fair in 1988.  The sisters decided to give performing a try at the Maryland State Fair’s vocal booth.  Although the performances were set to chart topping 80’s cover songs, the audience thought that they were at a highly promoted concert.  It was a random act, but they drew in an audience, so much so, they were asked back the following year to perform.  After that momentous summer, it took 7 years before the sisters would actually record their first demo, but once they laid their vocals in the studio after penning their first single “Apparition,” there was no returning.

In 1996, after graduating from community college TK Skinner worked on their first singles entitled “Apparition” and “Crying” at Frank Starchak’s “Toyz” Recording Studios in Baltimore, Maryland.  At the start of the Millennium, TK Skinner chose to tap into their talents of singing and songwriting, professionally, by semi-relocating to Los Angeles, California (Century City) staying for four summers (2000-2004).  They promoted their older singles after upgrading the lyrics and melody inside of the studio which caught the eyes of Ernesto Phillips and Renee Diggs of “Longevity Records.” The collaboration created a newly recorded “Apparition” but this time TK Skinner produced, wrote, and arranged the entire project.  The sisters also had the pleasure of recording a remix of "Apparition" produced by Derek Willie chief arranger and engineer of Art of Music Studios (Virginia).  In 2004, their mother Diana Skinner formed an independent record label called Let’s Change Records (LCR) to aid in promotion for her daughters.  By fall 2005, TK Skinner was featured on the front page of Baltimore’s Fox 45’s webpage and Fall Preview Magazine.

In 2006, TK Skinner opt to redo their vaulted songs as unplugged cuts working with Jim “Pinky” Beaman at Big3 Records in St. Petersburg, Florida.  The new CD was entitled “Organics.”  Their 2013 release “Dreamer” showcased the sisters’ enormous talents as musicians, singers, producers, arrangers, and songwriters.  The Dominant Duo prides themselves in working hard to achieve their dreams.  Currently, TK Skinner are registered members of ASCAP, WAMA, Global Songwriters Connection, and SONGWRITER’S GUILD OF AMERICA.  To date, they have worked with artists in Nashville, California, and Maryland.  They pen each lyric to their songs, are publishers within their own publishing companies, and owners of Let’s Change Records.
